Reaction Youtubers: A Different Category Of Creators.

From the first video published on YouTube back in 2005, titled “Me at the Zoo” by Jawed Karim, the co-founder of YouTube (who, fun fact, is Bangladeshi), there has been a plethora of content uploaded to the now-popular platform. However, recently, a new group of YouTubers has emerged, labelled as “Reaction YouTubers.” In short, reaction YouTubers react to and comment on other people’s videos. Although such channels seem to have gained popularity only recently, these channels have been around for a while.

Despite their popularity, reaction channels are heavily criticized and often accused of stealing content from the original creator. There are instances of people working hard to create a video that might have taken them days or months to make, only to get fewer views on their own video than people who are reacting to his/her content. Such instances not only hurt a channel’s relevance in the “YouTube algorithm”  but also directly affect an individual’s source of income. Thus, reaction YouTubers are faced with accusations of stealing content, being lazy, and uncreative.

Even though reaction YouTubers are disliked in general nowadays in the YouTube community, many channels have managed to prove themselves, gaining popularity and admiration. Reaction channels primarily thrive by creating a parasocial relationship. However, some channels also provide unique, entertaining, informative, or very insightful takes on a particular video. They might also introduce you to newer creators or shows that align with your interests. Back in 2019, when Covid-19 first hit, many people, including me started becoming aware of reaction channels due to being chronically online and having ceased natural social interactions. During that time, I was introduced to channels such as “Stevie Knight”, “Wes and Steph” and several others. Their videos grabbed my attention like any good engaging YouTube Channel.

Are you one of those people who dislikes the new era of rap especially when it lacks substance? Then head over to Stevie Knight’s channel, where you are guaranteed to find a whole collection of meaningful rap songs. His entire channel is based on breaking down rap songs for the masses who are unable to appreciate the lyricism and genius behind each line and that catchy beat. You’d be surprised how creative rap artists can be, as Stevie explains the complexity of certain verses. His enthusiasm for rap culture will  make you eager to learn more about it on your own.

Now, if you are someone who enjoys the company of others while watching movies and shows but also doesn’t feel always like asking anyone to watch it with you, check out “Wes and Steph”. The excellent commentary, witty jokes and epic reactions to the best moments will ensure that you have a lovely time!

While reaction channels are subjected to harsh rules as of recent YouTube guidelines, their popularity doesn’t seem to be dwindling any time soon. The channels that adhere to proper YouTube etiquette will only rise in numbers and be respected in the YouTube community as a proper creator rather than facing criticism. With a growing fan base that genuinely appreciates the person behind the screen, reaction YouTubers are carving out their place in the YouTube landscape slowly but surely.
