Infinity: A Different Approach to Life.

What is infinity? Well, infinity is a concept of something that is unlimited, endless, and without bound, it’s a mind-blowing concept that philosophers have pondered for centuries yet infinity is not only a concept but many things. Infinity is counterintuitive; it’s forever; it can be a circle or wormhole; it can be paradoxical, like Zeno’s paradox or the infinity hotel ; but it’s also beautiful and a source of wonder. I’ll explain how the idea of infinity and the infinite universe can shape our perspective about our own life to make it better and more beautiful.
Infinity can help us appreciate the preciousness of finitude. We all are here for a brief amount of time, so we should appreciate each moment and not miss out on life chasing mindless things. If we try to contemplate the vastness of the universe, it can help us put our own problems in perspective. It makes us realize that although important to us in the grand scheme of things our problems are just a tiny speck of dust. It may sound a bit cheesy but we all have infinite potential inside each of us. If we just try to internalize these ideas and thoughts we can change our lives in profound ways.
Personally speaking, infinitely has greatly shaped my perspective on life. In 1998, scientists discovered that the universe is not only expanding but doing so at an accelerating rate. The galaxies are moving away from each other with increasing speed, and what that means is that we will be cut off from other galaxies. So there will eventually not be any new energy sources in our galaxy. Life as we know it will be gone in approximately 100 billion years. Compared to the infinite vastness of the universe, 100 billion years is very brief.
So the era of life is just a sliver of time when we look at the full unfolding of the infinite universe and time. When I think about it, I find a great sense of meaning and connectedness to God. This awareness of life’s finitude may inspire fear in some, but it drives my desire to understand things, learn about different exciting things, unravel the mysteries of the universe, form close bonds, create beauty, and experience wonders, regardless of how fleeting that experience may be.
I’ll conclude by hoping that at least some of us will dig deep into infinity and its wonders eventually ending up finding ourselves deep within.
