A Day In Taif
Just around 90 minutes drive away from Makkah Al Mukarramah, the fertile hilly region of Taif is a city astoundingly 7000 feet up from sea level towards Yemen. Wow, what an incredible experience it was to visit Taif! The city is a true marvel of nature and modern architecture blended in a perfect mix. The journey to Taif was quite exciting, with the mountains looking breathtaking even from far away. We saw monkey troops lazing around or exploring parked vehicles on the roadside, and some mountain streams occasionally came into view as well.
The best part of the trip was visiting the historical sites in Taif. We learned that the city hosted our dear prophet in the year 619 and that the Addas Mosque in Taif commemorates the young man who converted to Islam after the prophet revealed to him what Jibril revealed to him about lineages of prophets. We also visited Bani Saad village, where the house of Halima Sadia, the wet nurse of the prophet, is located. Taif also has the grave of Abdullah Ibn Abbas, a great scholar and Sahaba of Islam. It was truly an enriching experience.
The prayer Rasool made for the oppressed residents of Taif is famous to this day. Jibril conveyed to his bleeding battered self that if he wished so Allah would crumble the mountains of Taif and oppressors within but the following is what he said in reply “I rather hope that Allah will raise from among their descendants people who will worship Allah the One, and will not ascribe partners to Him.”
Surely we've all heard that childhood story of the prophet and the granny who used to lay pricks in his way of daily commute. Although the Rasool bled he never harmed or misbehaved with her. In her sickness, he nursed her to health and this drove her heart to Islam.
Taif is also quite a popular Miqat for pilgrims. This serene city boasts all the facilities of most modern cities with serene gardens, farms, and mosques. It is a perfect relaxing getaway even for non-Muslims. Camels also known as ships of desert are quite huge. I saw one up close and was quite surprised. Riding a camel is camel is like going up a floor all while shaking and holding on. But it is satisfying. The city is a vibrant and joyful place, and it's no wonder that it's a very popular area and travel destination for people of all religions.
The expanse of Taif is quite mesmerising. Driving through the city feels like floating in clouds. Occasionally we saw cars malfunctioning on slopes. It was quite frightening as well as beautiful to see.
Especially the snake-like coiling of roads in the night was memorable. We enjoyed a meal from the local fresh produce. The eventful journey ended deep into the night but left us with a long-lasting impression.
